Christian Churches Together sponsored the event which included presentations and responses, a prayer walk, a panel discussion and the ceremonial signing of a long-delayed clergy response to Dr King's letter. Now, through this symposium, representatives of Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox and Evangelical backgrounds in the United States have done so. When in his historic letter he refused, religious leaders never responded. Dr King responded to members of the clergy who wrote to request that he cease his civil rights demonstrations. On 14-15 April an ecumenical symposium was held to renew commitment to racial justice and reconciliation by leaders of Christian denominations in the United States of America.
